What causes snoring is a question that can be answered multiple ways. From an anatomical standpoint, snoring is caused by a partially closed upper airway (the nose and throat). Everyone’s neck muscles relax during sleep, but sometimes they relax so much that the upper airway partly closes and becomes too narrow for enough air to travel through to the lungs.

Home Sleep Test



These sleep tests can be done at home right in your bed itself without full night presence of a Technician. Home Sleep Tests are very convenient.
For assisting in the tests, a Technician would visit your home along with a portable sleep lab machine. Such portable sleep lab machines are comparable to the size of a large smartphone. Either technician sets up the machine at night or teaches you to set it up yourself before going to sleep. These are simple machines and can be disconnected in the morning.
Generally, the cost is between 5k to 10k depending on the level and kind of study.


Hospital Sleep Lab Test

Such tests are conducted in Hospital's Sleep Lab during the night under the monitoring of a Medical Technician. For HOSPITAL sleep lab tests the patient has to book and take an appointment, wait for the "turn" and get admitted in the Hospital for one night and may have to spend part of a day too.

Hospital Sleep Lab machines are large complex machines. The only technician has to set up the machine at night for the patient before he going to sleep. These are complex machines and should be disconnected in the morning by technician only.
Generally, the cost is between 15k to 20k.

Home Sleep Tests

Hospital Based Sleep Lab Tests are advanced and are most appropriate as a second line of diagnostic tests. Such tests are advised by Doctors before taking advanced medical interventions.
For conducting these tests, prior appointments have to be taken which may vary from few days to few weeks for Hospital admission.<
Hospital sleep lab tests may cost 15k to 20k, depending on type of tests and Hospital room costs. Consultation and travel costs will be extra. And, in most cases, the patient has to take 1-2 days off from work.
In Comparison, Home Sleep Tests are Economical between 5k to 10k and are conducted with short notice at home. Most Importantly, these sleep tests can be done at home right on the patients bed itself without full night presence of a Technician. Patients tend to sleep better at their home rather than in Hospital. Home Sleep Tests are very convenient.
The results will give various parameters like snoring frequency, effects of snore on the patient etc. The results of Home sleep tests will give definite result as to whether the patient is suffering from OSA [Obstructive Sleep Apnea] or not.
For almost 80- 90% of the Patients, Home sleep tests are sufficient. After seeing the test results, the Sleep Medicine Doctor can take a decision as to whether further tests are required or not.

Preparing For A Sleep Study

Do not have any caffeine in the afternoon or evening before an overnight sleep study. This includes coffee, tea, cola, and chocolate.
Also, avoid drinking any alcohol. You do not want any substance to affect your sleep.
Try not to take any naps that day.
Before doing a test, wash your hair with shampoo only. Dry your hair and do not apply any hair sprays, oils or gels. Remove any nail polish from your Index Figure. If used, they could interfere with the sensors during the study.
Should I take my medication as usual?
It is vital that your sleep specialist is aware of any medications that you are taking. This includes both prescription and non-prescription drugs. He or she should even know if you are taking common cold medicines or pain relievers. Certain drugs can affect your sleep and the results of the study. You may need to gradually stop taking some medications in the days leading up to a sleep study. Your doctor will let you know if this is something you need to do. Do not stop taking any prescription medication without first talking to your sleep specialist.
